Make it Better, make it Squeezy

2025-09-10

Barker's of Geraldine

Your favourite Barker’s Tomato and BBQ Sauces are now in a NEW family-friendly squeezy bottle - same delicious taste, just easier to use.

Tomato Sauce is a must-have in any Kiwi fridge, and we wanted to make it easier to enjoy. Whether you're having fish & chips on the beach, dunking nuggets, or adding flavour to burgers and sausages, our new squeezy bottles make it simple.

Don’t worry — the recipes haven’t changed. They’re still packed with rich, ripe veggies and quality ingredients, with less sugar* and less salt*, no preservatives and are gluten free.

Why Squeezy bottles?

We know that when people think of Barker’s, they think of our iconic glass bottles and jars. But we also know that glass can be tricky — especially for tamariki who want to pour their own sauce. That’s why we’ve introduced our new family friendly squeezy bottles: they’re easier, safer, and more convenient for the whole whānau.

We understand that some of you may have concerns about the switch from glass to plastic. Many of us instinctively choose glass, believing it’s the more sustainable option. But sustainability is about more than just what happens after the bottle goes in the recycling bin.

When we look at the full lifecycle — from manufacturing to transport and recycling — both glass and plastic have their pros and cons.

Our new squeezy bottles are made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate), also known as recycling code #1. This type of plastic is widely recyclable across Aotearoa.

PET has a lower carbon footprint during production because it’s manufactured at much lower temperatures than glass. It’s also lightweight and compact, meaning we can transport more bottles more efficiently. Our PET bottles are made right here in New Zealand, so they don’t have to travel far to reach our factory.

Glass still remains the preferred choice for most of our products. However, we’re continuously adapting our packaging to better meet consumer needs—ensuring optimal value, functionality, and convenience based on how the product is used. We can assure you that the product tastes just as good as it did in the glass bottle.

How do I recycle my bottle?

When you’ve squeezed every drop out of your bottle, we encourage you to remove the lid, wash the bottle out and then pop it in your curbside recycling bin.

The cap is a #5 plastic, which is recyclable, however, NZ recycling facilities don’t currently have the technology in place to process caps and lids (this applies to all lids, including milk caps and ice-cream lids). The Packaging Forumis working with central government and local councils to upgrade facilities to ensure caps can be recycled in the future.

In the meantime, you can collect your caps (as you would do with soft plastics) and drop them off at participating cap recycling drop off locations such as Pak‘nSaves, New Worlds and Mitre 10s around Aotearoa. These caps are then collected by independent recycling plants and processed to be recycled into things like wheelie bins, and plant pots. You can find your nearest drop-off location here.

As the recycling system changes, we will update you on the best way to recycle our packaging.

Where do I buy them?

Our new Better Squeezy Sauces are on shelves now in New World and Pak‘nSave supermarkets around NZ, our Barker’s Foodstore & Eateries in Ponsonby and Geraldine, and Barkers.co.nz. You’ll see them on shelves in Woolworths from 15th September 2025.
